本次故事接續《Halo 5》所發生的事件後，緊接了一場慘敗之役而繼續發展，殘破不堪的 UNSC 艦隊受困於破壞殆盡的 07 特區地表上。在這片殘骸之中，有一群名為「流放者」的鬼面獸戰士，正在殘破的環狀世界到處肆虐。雖然欠缺人手又火力不足，士官長仍須竭力阻止流放者修復環帶，對抗銀河系的最大威脅，重新奪回掌控。
